With deep respect for historical memory and cultural heritage, Tetraktys Films stands as a timeless guardian of Cypriot identity, shedding light on the facets, traditions and critical historical periods of Cyprus. Through the creation of specialised historical documentaries, such as the landmark works ‘Memory of a Sweet Homeland’ and ‘The Homeland Across the Sea’, as well as the monumental historical publication ‘Voices and Memories of Asia Minor and Cyprus: They Are Not Erased, They Are Not Forgotten’, we combine rigorous academic documentation with cinematic excellence. By preserving oral testimonies, archaeological finds and previously unknown artefacts, we transform historical research into vivid imagery and written narrative, offering future generations a priceless work of national and cultural self-awareness.

Synopsis

The documentary focuses on the dramatic story of Anastasis Tosounoglou, from Alanya in Asia Minor, who made Cyprus his second homeland. His story reflects that of all the Greek refugees from Asia Minor who, after the Greco-Turkish war of 1922, found refuge on the island of Cyprus, where they took root and became part of Cypriot society. The struggle for survival of Anastasis Tosounoglou may have marked his soul and shaped his character, yet his humanity and his devotion to his fellow human beings remained unchanged until his death.

Synopsis

The historical course of the cult of the Great Goddess in Cyprus from the Chalcolithic to the Roman period. Since antiquity, Cyprus has been known as the island of Aphrodite, the place where the goddess was born and worshipped. Sixteen hundred years ago, the famed sanctuary of the Great Goddess of Cyprus at Palaepaphos fell silent, yet the echo of her cult kept glowing faintly through time. Today we trace the remnants of the presence of the Cypriot Goddess in the land that gave birth to her and worshipped her as the Anassa, as the pre-eminent female principle. Guided by the archaeological…

Synopsis

The documentary Kinyras: The Cherished Priest of Aphrodite portrays the personality of Kinyras through references to ancient sources and interviews with academics and artists. The myths surrounding Kinyras are also depicted using cartoon animation. It is an elegy for the most important mythical figure of ancient Cypriot history, Kinyras. Although the memory of his name survives to this day, Cypriots know very little about him.

Synopsis

The History of Copper in Cyprus documentary aims to highlight for the first time in such depth a very important aspect of the rich historical and mining heritage of our country. The carving of the Cypriot land for the exploitation of its copper sulphide deposits, for the production and marketing of the most precious metal in its bowels, that of copper, is so long and magnificent that it has made it synonymous with it. References to ancient literature, depictions in frescoes, ancient shipwrecks loaded with Cypriot copper ingots and a wealth of other finds, such as ancient galleries, stone…

Synopsis

In 1992 Stavros Papageorghiou documented on camera Goris Gregoriades' research about the alignment of three ancient temples in Cyprus with the sun at the solstices. Twenty years later the two men take a journey into the past seeking out the truth behind the universal phenomenon of ancient temples aligning with celestial bodies. During his initiation trip into religion and philosophy, Stavros records how two temples of Goddess Aphrodite and one of Apollo located in Cyprus, are linked through geodesy with the Delphi oracle and the Parthenon in Greece, the Aphrodite temple in Aphrodisias in Asia…

Synopsis

The first volume of the two-volume edition “Voices and Memories of Asia Minor and Cyprus” is monumental and dense with precious content: primary archival material, rare photographs and authentic testimonies. The sheer volume of the material, together with its constant growth, made a second volume necessary — it is in preparation and expected to be completed within 2027. Across its 768 pages, the first volume brings out Cyprus’s relationship with Asia Minor, and in particular with the cities on its southern coast that lie so close to us: Antalya, Alanya, Mersin and others. After the…

Synopsis

This book is the fruit of a long inner quest that matured over the past decades. It is the result of deep study and meaningful encounters with people who, like me, are searching for the truth, as well as of my own experiential pilgrimages to ancient places of worship in Cyprus, Greece, Asia Minor, Malta, Wales and Egypt. In essence, the book transfers to paper my deepest thoughts and beliefs, accompanied by rich visual material. Part of this material comes from the filming of my documentaries “Entelecheia”, “The Great Goddess of Cyprus” and “Kinyras: Priest and Founder of Aphrodite”, while an…

Who We Are

The story of Tetraktys Films and Stavros Papageorgiou.

Stavros Papageorgiou reading at his desk
Stavros Papageorgiou

Stavros Papageorgiou is one of the most important and established Cypriot directors, producers and researchers in the field of documentary film. Having studied Film Directing in the United States (University of Bridgeport), he founded the production company Tetraktys Films in 1994, based in Aglandjia, Cyprus, with a clear vision: the rescue, documentation and international promotion of the island's historical and cultural heritage.

His contribution to documenting the culture of Cyprus is invaluable, and unfolds through three central pillars:

1.Cinematic Documentation & Historical Documentary

Stavros Papageorgiou has devoted decades to field research, rescuing oral testimonies, archaeological data and unknown historical artefacts. Through his camera, scientific knowledge becomes living image. His work includes landmark documentaries such as:

  • •“The History of Bronze in Cyprus” (2025): A major record of the metal that shaped the ancient Cypriot economy and culture.
  • •“Memory of a Sweet Homeland”: A devastating journey of memory and identity.
  • •“The Homeland Across the Sea”: A deep look at the geopolitical and human dimensions of the region.
  • •“The Great Goddess of Cyprus” (2015): An archaeological and ethnographic survey of the cult of Aphrodite and prehistoric idols.
  • •“Troodos UNESCO Global Geopark” & “Akamas — Land of Myth, Nature, Tradition”: Works that connect the unique Cypriot nature and geology with local tradition.

2.Monumental Historical Publications

Recognising that image and the written word must travel together for memory to remain indelible, he spearheaded specialised publishing ventures. The finest example is the edition “Voices and Memories of Asia Minor and Cyprus: They Are Not Erased, They Are Not Forgotten”. This work functions as a precious historical archive that conveys, in their own words, the testimonies of the people who lived through the events, ensuring that national self-awareness is handed down intact to future generations.

3.Cultural Networking: The AEI Film Festival

His contribution extends beyond his own work, as he is the initiator and Artistic Director of the International Archaeological, Ethnographic and Historical Documentary Film Festival of Cyprus (AEI Film Festival). Through this institution, Papageorgiou has turned Cyprus into an international meeting point for creators from around the world, promoting education, historical research and intercultural dialogue through the art of documentary.

Overall, the work of Stavros Papageorgiou is not simply a record of events, but an act of cultural resistance against oblivion, keeping the roots of Cyprus alive both on screen and on paper.
